Camouflage-by-cloaking is a well-documented technique in many groups of animals. Crabs, spiders, snails and insects have all been observed to deliberately gather and carry it with them in order to hide their bodies from both predators and prey. Now, rare insect fossils preserved in amber have revealed that this camouflage technique dates back more than 100 million years. An international team including Museum Scientific Associate Edmund Jarzembowski studied fossils from the Cretaceous Period, between 145 and 66 million years ago, including rare larval specimens. By examining more than 300,000 insects, they were able to find evidence of debris carrying in several groups, establishing not only that this behaviour was well-established by this time, but that it evolved independently in different species. The full story is reported in our latest Science News piece. http://bit.ly/NHM-Oldest-Insect-Camouflage

Today's #TaxonomyTuesday species is seen under scanning electron microscope: Atta cephalotes, a species of leaf-cutter ant. Atta is one of two ant genera native to the Americas which are known as 'leaf-cutters' - the other is Acromyrmex. The leaf-cutting behaviour of these ants supports fungus agriculture within their colonies: the insects actively cultivate fungi in the Lepiotaceae family, with different species of ant using different fungi species. The ants carefully feed their fungi crop with freshly cut plant matter, tending them continuously and guarding them from pests. The fungus is then used to feed the ant larvae. This particular species was one of the first ants to be formally classified, and was first named Formica cephalotes by Carl Linnaeus in 1758. Its specific name is a reference to its relatively large head. Today's BBC Radio 4 episode of Natural Histories examines the wonderful world of ants and how human beings have connected to them. You can listen live at 11.00 or catch up with BBC iPlayer. http://bit.ly/BBCRadio4-NaturalHistories-Ant
